We’ve all faced it—the desire to give up and quit. Sometimes the mountain seems too steep, the path too detoured with road blocks, the outcome while firmly in view just a tad out of reach.
We’ve all been there at one time or another and we’ve all most likely quit at one time or another as well. But when we do that nagging little voice in the back of our minds taunts us with clichés such as quitters never prosper, the only way to fail is to fail to try, only losers quit, don’t be a quitter.
So what to do? Resolve yourself to defeat and quit, or pick yourself up and try once again?
Many of the world’s most successful people failed countless times prior to achieving success. The list is vast and wide. Oprah, Einstein, Edison, Lincoln, Stephen King are all on that list. Their determination and drive propelled them forward following defeat. They all dusted off the debris, regrouped, recharged and hit the restart button and tried once again.
Perseverance and perspiration prevailed.
So next time you feel like quitting or that your quest and dream is not only out of reach but impractical and impossible, stop, take a deep breath, go for a walk, meditate. Do whatever it is that you need that enables you to recharge your spirit and regain your focus.
Once you have some clarity to the situation, you can analyze what worked, what didn’t, how you can tweak your approach to make it work and what needs to be discarded and replaced with something new and fresh. And if after all this logic dictates that perhaps it is time to let it go and move on, do so. But do so with grace and pride and take the lessons learned into the future with you as you attempt a new quest, dream and goal.
Because they only way quitting is really detrimental is if it crushes your spirit and individuality, if it plummets you into a mindset that you are a failure and worse a quitter who can never accomplish anything. Because this is simply not true. There is value to be found in everything. So find those nuggets and gems and polish them and tuck them away so when you decide to try again either at the same quest but with a different approach or at a new quest, those nuggets and gems will be there at your disposal and ready to help you achieve your goal and most of all help you shine.
If you can do this, then the next time you find yourself at the crossroad junction vacillating between whether you should continue on or give up and quit, you will probably decide to carry on.
